Personal Notes:  Hope you are all enjoying the summer – it’s going by so quickly.  Each season I set goals for myself, so far so good in accomplishing them for the summer.   Next, I’ll be working on formulating goals for fall.

What were your goals for the summer?  Have you accomplished them?  Do you need to set some for fall?  Perhaps your goal is to be healthier.  If so, how can I help?

Nutrition Tip

Veggie Hunt When working with clients and giving them some motivation to increase their vegetable consumption I often suggest they go on a “veggie hunt.”  This means they go to the grocery store or produce or farmer’s market and hunt for a new vegetable – one they have either never had before, have never cooked themselves before or one they have not consumed in ages.  Try it the next time you go shopping.

Featured Recipe

Quinoa Salad (serves 4)

1 1 / 2 cup cooked Quinoa

carrots, shredded

zucchini, cut in “fingers”

olives, sliced

scallions, sliced

cherry tomatoes, cut in half

2 T olive oil

3 T red wine vinegar

1 T Dijon mustard

Salt, pepper

Mix Quinoa and Veggies.  In a separate bowl mix oil, vinegar, mustard.  Pour dressing over grain and veggies, toss.  Add salt and pepper to taste.  Depending on how many veggies you add, you may need more dressing.  Best made a few hours ahead – to let the flavors blend.

Motivation for Change by Brenda Jaeck

Making changes to eating habits (or any other habits for that matter) requires motivation.  Sometimes people are scared into change – fear is one form of motivation.  This might manifest itself with a health concern or suddenly realizing that none of your clothes fit.  There are MANY motivators to eating healthy and they do NOT have to come from fear.  Here are just some of the benefits of eating healthy – perhaps one of them will motivate you.

Weight  Loss -Weight is a common motivator for making a change to eating habits.  By focus on eating more balanced and nutritious meals you actually need to eat less food.  As such, you will consume fewer calories and weight loss will take place.  Often the motivation to lose weight creates bent intentions – leading to fad diets or starving oneself.  These are NOT effective weight less techniques.  A balanced approach is.

Aging Gracefully-People who eat well age better – they are healthier, with fewer illnesses.  Many have not grasped the cause and affect of food and one’s health.  You know the saying: “You are what you eat.” The statement “Food becomes you” makes the point in a stronger fashion.

Looking Good-Did you ever see someone that just sparkles – their skin is gorgeous, their hair is shiny, they have a sparkle in their eye?  Chances are they eat a balanced, nutritious diet and drink lots of water.  The quality (and quantity for that matter) of the food we eat affects our skin and overall look – even our posture!

Balanced Emotions -If the diet is balanced, emotions are generally more balanced as well.  An unbalanced diet creates chaos in the body.  This chaos leaks into the mind.

Overall Life Balance -When the diet is out of balance, life seems to be as well.  We are less able to cope with the everyday ups and downs of life; this is where stress sets in.  Sleep can also be GREATLY affected by diet – either in creating chaos in the body and mind and causing difficulty in getting to sleep; or in the processing of the food and taxing the organs thereby creating difficulty in staying asleep.

There are many motivators to make changes to your diet.  It does not have to come from a negative point.   If you feel you need or want to make a change, find a motivator that will do just that.

Get to Balance – Did you accomplish your goals for this season?  What about the next one?

Are your health concerns impeding you from living life fully? Do you want to change your relationship with food from the inside out? Are you seeking deep seeded balance and wellness?

I would eagerly welcome the opportunity to work with you on a personal level.  We can work together privately to create a customized life-long plan for you AND create the steps to incorporate those changes into your existing routines.

Through my counseling services I can help you create and maintain balance in your life by using nutrition as a focus and a tool.  To do this I look at your entire lifestyle to achieve maximum health.  This is accomplished through education and private consultations where an individualized program is developed for you.  These consultations include evaluating your current diet and overall lifestyle and then making easily implemented, gradual changes.  Additionally, you’ll receive outside information in the form of articles, books, tapes and recipes.  Also included are additional monthly forms of education and participation -- activities like cooking coaching, health food store shopping hints, light exercising functions and other activities. My practice is telephone based, allowing for maximum flexibility and ease. To learn more to go http://www.seedstochange.com/programs.asp.
