Happy summer. It’s almost
here. I had an amazing experience this week.
I have been rather disconnected from my yoga practice of late. Someone earlier in the week asked me if I
knew I did yoga for ME. I realized I
had begun to look at my yoga practice as something to do – a task to
master. Hum, the totally wrong attitude.
Once creating this awareness in my subconscious I allowed an opening
for change. Last night in a class with
one of my favorite teachers – I had one of the most amazing, most
connected practices. Like I ALWAYS say
– awareness IS the first step in creating change.

This is a great one for summer
BBQ’s and picnics.
Lentil Burgers (makes 10 – 12)
2 large onions, finely chopped
2 carrots, finely chopped
1 celery stalk, finely chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large garlic clove, crushed
1 cup dried green or brown lentils cooked & well drained
6 teaspoons chopped parsley
Sauté the onion, carrot and celery in oil in a large saucepan for10 minutes
until soft and lightly browned, stirring from time to time. Add the garlic
and lentils, stir briefly. Add 2 cups
water; bring to boil, simmer until lentils are soft, about 20 minutes. Drain, if necessary. Mash all ingredients by hand or puree in a
processor until the mixture holds together. Add parsley and season with
pepper. If necessary, you may need to
add a little flour if the mixture is little too sticky.

current tomato situation is obviously reminiscent of the spinach debacle of
two years ago. It does however create
awareness about a few issues (and hopefully in the long run create change
– awareness IS the first step).
one-on-one level it ought to get us thinking about the quality of food we eat
and being aware of where our food comes from.
The other point it hopefully drives home is that the food we eat
REALLY does affect our body. When
toxic and other harmful substances are in the food we eat it has a DIRECT
affect on our bodies as well as our short term and long term health. Certainly contracting e coli or botulism
from eating spinach or tomatoes is an extreme example. If you think about it, it’s not THAT
much different, in the long run, from contracting diabetes from eating too
much sugar and processed foods or contracting heart disease from eating too
much fatty and otherwise unhealthy food.
We often do not think about the other unhealthy substances in our food
sources. If botulism and/or e coli can
infiltrate the fibers of food why do we think that pesticides and fertilizers
don’t do the same? Everything
happens for a reason – I truly believe that these food scares are here
to teach us a lesson. Don’t lose
national level - hopefully this is creating more awareness about how fragile
our infrastructure and food sources are.
There needs to be more awareness of this topic in our country (and in
the world in general) We often get
bogged down in the process – being concentrated only on producing and
producing more at that. We need to be
more careful as we are destroying the earth and our health in the process of
being obsessed with profit margins.
